The German post office of the GDR (shortened: DP) was due to a law from 3 April 1959 as a state institution of the carriers of the post office and telecommunication system in the GDR. Their the exclusive right was transferred for message transport, transmission of news as well as to the selling by products of press (post office newspaper selling) on the area of the GDR. Offences against the postal monopoly were occupied with sanctions (order punitive measures, fines, imprisonments on probation, liberty withdrawal up to two years).

Arrangement

The German post office of the GDR was arranged into managements and offices, in addition belonged a collective combine telecommunication construction as well as further institutions and educational facilities to the enterprise. The DP was led by the Minister for post office and telecommunication system. Were directly subordinated to it:

  • the radio management
  • the collective combine telecommunication construction
  • the telecommunication office of the government
  • the main post office
  • the school of engineering "pink Luxembourg" of the German post office Leipzig
  • institut for post office and telecommunication system
  • institut for socialist of the post office and telecommunication system

  • broadcast and televisiontechnical central office
  • the studio technology television
  • the studio technology broadcast
  • the office for newspaper selling (ZVA)
  • the central office for vocational training
  • the central office for radio control and measuring service
  • the central office for stock management (ZfM)
  • center the post office traffic department (ZPA)
  • center the post office and office for communications traffic (ZPF).

Were subordinated to the directors/conductors of the general agencies depending upon local competence:

  • the post office and telecommunication offices (81)
  • the telecommunication offices (15)
  • the main post offices (31)
  • the offices for telecommunication construction
  • the course post offices
  • the operating schools
  • the remote office Berlin
  • the telephone exchange Berlin
  • the office for post office driving Berlin.

Service ranks

Service ranks were lent to the coworkers (about 130,000), them carried a uniform, which runs in the years was several times changed. The training took place among other things at the school of engineering in Leipzig as well as at the university for traffic (HfV) in Dresden.

For service rank were relevant the technical qualification, the activity and the duration of the affiliation to the German post office. The first award of a service rank was called certifying, afterwards transports could take place. For certifying and transport documents were executed.

At the uniform service ranks were marked by combinations of stars, rigid ones and oak leaves in gold on the cuff.

Following service ranks of the German post office (GDR) were lent:

  • Unterassistent, assistant, upper assistant, main assistant
  • secretary, upper secretary, main secretary
  • Supervisor, upper supervisor, office man
  • Advice, upper advice, main advice

Post offices and post offices

The Postverkehr was completed in 2.279 post offices and 9,586 post offices, 1985 was delivered 1.273 billion Briefsendungen, 15 millions package, 40 million packages and 1.317 millions local as well as 767 million long-distance calls was led, whereby the equipment degree of the private households with telephone subscriptions was to be regarded compared with western industrialized countries as small. With the reunification of Germany 1990 the German post office of the GDR was integrated into the Federal Post Office, used after conclusion of the privatisation process the name again, this time as German post office AG.
