The German issuing bank was the counterpart of the GDR to the bank of German countries of the Federal Republic. It was created on 20 July 1948 as a successor of the German emission and clearing bank.
The bank in east Berlin had their seat. The "law over the German issuing bank" from 31 October 1951 transferred the German issuing bank the exclusive right to the expenditure from notes and for the guidance of the cash business of the state household. It was subordinate however as not independent institution of the supervision of the Ministry of finances.
To 01 January 1968 the German issuing bank in state bank 9 of the GDR was renamed.
