German Institut for economic research (DIW Berlin) with seat in Berlin is largest German Wirtschaftsforschungsinstitut. Independent Institut is a mechanism of the applied research in the area of the economic science.

It was created 1925 of Ernst Wagemann as Institut for market research. Since the year 2000 Institut stands for Carpenter under the line of his president Professor Dr. Klaus F.

Admits is the DIW for its economic situation prognoses and the DIW business barometer. In this connection it is involved in the community diagnosis of the six prominent German research institutes for economics. It is prominent in the area of the micro-economic research to socio-economic questions in the context of the socio-economic panel (SOEP).

The research work is organized in seven departments:

• Economic situation
• World economy
• State
• Innovation, industry, service
• Information society and competition
• Energy, traffic, environment
• Profile study socio-economic panel

Under the kind of its financing the DIW member of the Leibniz community, in section B - economics and social sciences, is integrated regional sciences.
