The German farmer's association (DBV) is the agricultural central association in the Federal Republic of Germany. Despite the decreasing/going back meaning of the agrarian sector it applies still as one of the most powerful syndicates in Germany.
Its tidy members are the 18 national farmer's associations as well as the federation of the German land youth, the German Raiffeisenverband and the Federal association of agricultural specialized school graduates. The number of the associated members is substantially larger; these are the agriculture close standing industries (approximately 40 professional associations).
The DBV has the legal form of a registered association with seat in Berlin. Further offices are in Bonn and Brussels. The association has three organs: the meeting of the members, the presidency and the president. Its youth and new generation organization is the "federation of the German land youth".
There is no individual membership in the DBV. The individual farmers are organized in the national farmer's associations. These achieve a very high level of organization (on the average over 90% all approximately 400,000 agricultural enterprises). From this it cannot be closed however that many farmers are actively involved in the association policy. There is rather a position elite from yield-strong full acquisition farmers, which cooperates party-politically closely with the CDU/CSU.
Particularly over the circle offices the farmer's association offers however a service offer, which is attractive for smaller farmers even to its members: e.g. Consultation in questions of the social security as well as with tax affairs and legal problems.
Once a year the DBV publishes the "situation report for the situation of the agriculture". It proves representatively the economic development of agricultural enterprises. Are appropriate for the analysis for the economic situation of the German agriculture far over 20.000 end-of-year procedures from agricultural main and supplementary income enterprises as well as unincorporated firms and agrarian cooperatives to reason.
The German farmer's association holds the opinion in the public offensively that it is compellingly necessary for reasons of the quality assurance of agricultural products and the consumer protection that rural products are sold to certain minimum prices.
After for instance the Discounter offered in March 2005 in the context of a publicity campaign a litre of milk for 33 cent to material, federation boss Gerd Sonnleitner in Berlin called the milk farmers to protests before more than 280 markets of the chain.
