The German energy industry exhibits altogether many parallels to the energy industry in other European countries. In the following a description of history, the energy market, the power production, the energy trade and the energy transfer as well as the federations in Germany.

History

In Germany a nationally controlled structure of regional monopolies with defined and nationally guaranteed demarcation lines on national level on the one hand and on the level developed of the local power supply firms (EVU, public utilities) on the other hand. Here the power industry law (EnWG), brought from the Nazis to the preparation on the wartime economy 1935 on the way, played a central role. The Sicherstellung of the power supply is incumbent on the municipalities in the context of the local precaution for existence, which received condition rank with the basic laws in the Federal Republic.

During in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) the level of the local supplying structures as far as possible with the centralistic country-wide supplying structure became coordinated, maintained the Federal Republic the horizontal split structure and essentially also the power industry law of 1934. With the entry of the GDR to the Federal Republic of Germany in the Lands of the Federal Republic developed again the local supplying structure was again restituted.

In the outgoing 70's and through the 80's it came into Germany too partially embittered arguments around the use of the atomic energy (see also nuclear power). In the anti-nuclear power plant movement also the Greens had one of their strongest roots. The Red-Green Federal Government among chancellors Gerhard agreed upon the so-called atomic door in the context of so-called energy consent discussions with the German operators of atomic power plants.

With the novella of the power industry law (EnWG) in the year 1998 the path of the gradual liberalisation of the energy industry was taken. The novella became necessary by an appropriate guideline of the European union of 1996. With the "second law for the reorganization of the power industry law" a further novella was adopted. It stepped on 13 July 2005 into force. The legal text is here available.

Federations

In Germany there are at present a great many federations in the German energy industry. In the course of the adjustment some federations aim at however a fusion for the year 2006, in order to speak in the public more easily with a voice.

  • Federation of the electricity supply industry (VDEW)
  • Federal association of the German gas and water management (BGW)
  • Federation of local enterprises (VKU)
  • Groupement of the entreprises et Organismes de Distribution D' energy (GEODE)

A link list of the most well-known federations is observable with the VKU.
