Gerhardt Katsch (* 14. May 1887 in Berlin; "Â 7. March 1961 in grab forest) was a professor for internal medicine at the seriousness Moritz Arndt university grab forest. With the initiative for the mechanism of the first home for the clinical and socialmedical support of Diabetikern in Germany, which took place 1930 in Garz on the Baltic Sea island it is considered as a founder of the Diabetologie in Germany.
Gerhardt Katsch became to 14. May 1887 in Berlin born, its father was painter by occupation. It visited the High School in Berlin and began 1905 a study of biology to the Sorbonne in Paris. From 1906 to 1911 it studied then medicine in Marburg and Berlin. it attained a doctorate to 1912 in Berlin and changed then to Hamburg, where it was active from 1912 to 1914 as Assistenzarzt and from 1914 to 1917 as an upper physician in Altona. From 1917 to 1920 he was an upper physician at the university clinic Marburg. Here it habilitierte also in the year 1917, one year later became it Titularprofessor. From 1920 to 1926 he worked as an upper physician on the university clinic in Frankfurt (Main), where he was appointed 1921 the extraordinary professor. Subsequently, it changed to the holy spirit hospital of the city as a Chefarzt of the internal hospital.
The medical and scientific interest of Gerhardt Katsch applied already early for that diabetes mellitus. In the year 1921 he already began one year after the pure representation of the insulin by Frederick Banting and Charles Best with investigations for the clinical use from insulin to the treatment of Diabetikern.
1928 it was appointed as director of the medical hospital and professor for internal medicine to the University of grab forest. To 30. March 1930 took place under its co-operation the establishment of the "Arndt donation Garz - Diabetikerheim". Already approx. six months later, on 1 September of the same, took up with the Diabetikerheim to Garz on the island the first mechanism yearly for the socialmedical support of Diabetikern to Germany and Europe the enterprise. The home had for opening 30 places.
1937 appeared to theses" with the "Garzer the most important publication of Gerhardt Katsch. In this writing it postulated the principle of the productive welfare service with Diabetikern. This is based on the principle the fact that a Diabetiker can be with optimal therapy from insulin supply, physical activity and training "fully work and benefitable" and thus not as ill but when "conditionally healthy" is to be regarded.
In the night of to 29. to 30 April 1945 Gerhardt Katsch, to this time director/conductor Greifswalder university clinics, belonged together with the rector at that time of the University of Professor Carl angel and the deputy commander of city Colonel Max Otto worm brook to a group from three parliament eras, which to the moving forward Red Army the offer brought for the surrender and combatless delivery of the city grab forest. 1953 reached Gerhardt Katsch tidy member of the German Academy of Sciences Berlin and 1955 member of the Leopoldina. Among his national acknowledgments among other things "earned physician of the people" (1951) and "outstanding scientist of the people" ranked the award of the honour titles (1956) as well as the national price of the GDR (1952). From 1954 to 1957 he was a rector of the University of grab forest. On the occasion of the of anniversary of the establishment of the University of grab forest it exerted itself 1956 in two letters at the GDR president at that time William Pieck for students of the university, who had been involved in student unrests in grab forest 1955. 1957 were emeritiert Gerhardt Katsch. It remained however beyond that up to its death in the year 1961 director of the institute in Karl castle.
Institut in Karl castle carried the name of his founder starting from 1961 with renaming to Institut for diabetes "Gerhardt Katsch", starting from 1972 was called it then Zentralinstitut for diabetes "Gerhardt Katsch". 1992 came the research range of the institute first to the University of grab forest, before 1996 separating a subrange took place, which exists since then as Institut for diabetes "Gerhardt Katsch" registered association.
After Gerhardt Katsch are beyond that roads in Wiesbaden and grab forest designated. The German diabetes company lends since 1979 annually Gerhardt Katsch medal at humans, "around the well-being of the Diabetiker made itself earned particularly".
