Genes Myron Amdahl (* 16 November 1922 in Flandreau, South Dakota, the USA) is a computer architect and a hit CH entrepreneur of Norwegian descent living in the USA. To international admittingness came he by his work in the range of the large computers with IBM and by its enterprises created later.
Amdahl was born as a son of immigrants in Flandreau, South Dakota. During 2. World war served it in the Navy. 1948 it locked its study of technical physics to the "South Dakota State University". Subsequently, it studied theoretical physics at the "University OF Wisconsin" and attained a doctorate 1952 with the draft of its first computer, the WISC. In the June of the same yearly it accepted a well paid position with IBM.
At IBM Amdahl worked on the development IBM 704 and IBM 709. Further it was involved in the Stretch project, which formed the basis for IBM 7030. In December 1955 it left IBM for the first time. Afterwards it was busy with Ramo Wooldridge and Aeronutronic. In September 1960 it returned to IBM, in order to work on the development of the System/360-Familie. 1965 were its appointment as IBM the Fellow and it became executive committee of the ACS Laboratory in Menlo park in California. It left the second time IBM in September 1970, since its ideas were rejected. With the support of Fujitsu it created the Amdahl corporation in Sunnyvale in California and entered into the large computer market. it supplied its first machine out the Amdahl 470 V6 to 1975 with. This was a compatible, cheaper and more efficient replacement of the System/360 165. The Amdahl 470 V6 and the pertinent peripheral devices of third manufacturers made it for companies possible to implement System/360-Applikationen without IBM hardware.
Amdahl left its enterprise in August 1979, in order to create Trilogy of system. Also over 200 million dollar capital was the goal of the company of sketching still cheaper chips for large computers. Within fewer months after that 60 million dollar heavy stock exchange course enterprises failed the project. The company shifted its efforts now into the range of the VLSI technology. Also these efforts were doomed to failure - the company fused 1985 with the "Elxsi corporation". Also Elxsi developed badly, and so Amdahl left the company 1989. 1987 it had however already created a further company - Andor international. Into these it set its hopes now to be able to seize in the large computer market by improved production engineering and smaller, more efficient machines foot. Production problems and the strong competition pressure led the company 1995 into the bankruptcy.
Decided firmly along-justified it 1996 "Commercial DATA of server (CDS)" - again in Sunnyvale -, again hoped it in the large computer market to mix together to be able. This mark concentrated the company on super+cooled processors for physically smaller machines. One of these machines, which CDS produced 1997, was the ESP/490 (Enterprise server platform), an advancement of the P/390 of IBM. Since changed much at that time - the name of the company and its Entwicklungsbereich. The company is today under the name "Xbridge of system" admits and produces cross-linking software like "DATA host Connect", in order to connect large computers and open systems. In March 2005 Amdahl no more than member of the management on the homepage von Xbridge is not called.
In November 2004 Amdahl member in the "board OF Advisors OF Massively became parallel Technologies". One assumes that he withdrew himself to a large extent from the industry and more on his advisory function concentrates.
1965 were appointed Amdahl IBM the Fellow. He was appointed 1967 member in "national the Academy OF engineering" and 1986 he the Alumnus of the century of the "South Dakota State University". He registered several patents under his name and received altogether 4 honour doctor titles.
