When one designates ford a flat place in a brook or a river course, at which waters can be crossed to foot or with vehicles. At fords of rivers among other things numerous cities developed in the Middle Ages, because trade routes ran there and partially also tariffs could be raised. With vehicles the wading depth designates the maximum immersing height in the water. Crossing this place is also called (through) fords.

Fords also the river traversing were called, which were characterised by the fact that they were to be reached easily; This particularly applies to swampy areas in the north German lowlandses.
