The Friedrich Hopfner medal is the highest honor of Austria for outstanding scientific achievements in geodesy, in particular in the area of the European earth measurement. Their attention lies on Wissenschaftern of the German linguistic area.

Donation

The medal was donated 1977 by that approximately 20 members of the Austrian commission for the international earth measurement, which is called now Austrian geodetic commission. The donation took place in appreciation of earnings/services Friedrich Hopfners, professor for higher geodesy at the technical university Vienna from 1934] until 1949, for the earth measurement and applied geophysics.

Finances of the donation are based on private means of the members, majority the full professors on training pulpits of geodesy and the surveying goods/are. The suggested winners may not be members of the (and/or now so that the circle of possible candidates - apart from exceptions - concentrates on the close foreign country.
