Freon is a label name for a group of modified hydrocarbons, which in place of the hydrogen atoms of the unchanged basic materials of atoms one or of the two halogens Fluor and Chlor contain.

While Freon is the label name of DuPont, freon is the label name of most - both designates the same group of hydrocarbons.

Freone became in 20. Century used into Europe and North America in different areas, mainly as propulsion gas and (safety) refrigerants. This use stopped however, up to few special's applications like the supercritical drying process, to a large extent.

More well-known Freone

  • R 11 (tri chlorine fluorine methane) = CCl3F
  • R 12 (Dichlordifluormethan) = CCl2F2
  • R 22 (Chlordifluormethan) = CHClF2
  • R 10 (tetrachloromethane) = CCl4
  • R 20 (chloroform) = CHCl3
  • R 110 (Hexachlorethan) = Cl3C-CCl3
  • R 113 (1,1,2-Trifluor-1,2,2-Trichlorethan) = CClF2-CCl2F
  • R 114 (1,1,2,2-Tetrafluor-1,2-Dichlorethan) = CClF2-CClF2
  • R 13B1 (bromine tri fluorine methane) = BrCF3

Freon notation

Similarly to the halon notation the following designation way applies to Freone:

  • R DKHF
    • [D] stands for the number of double bonds
    • [K] stands for the number of carbon atoms, around one degraded
    • [H] stands for the number of hydrogen atoms, around one increased
    • [F] stands for the number of fluorine atoms
  • [R] comes from the English word for cooling agents (Refrigerant)

If one of the numbers has the value zero, she is omitted at presented values. The remaining connection places at the carbon atoms are occupied by chlorine atoms.

For example for R11, CCl3F:

  • It is not missing a double bond, therefore is D=0.
  • Furthermore the number of carbon atoms is degraded by one (=K) also 0.
  • H=1, since no Wasserstoffatom=0 increases 1 by one results in.
  • F=1 is the number of fluorine atoms in the molecule.

Thus the designation reads: R11.

Freone have usually in (K=0) or two (K=1) carbon atom case K is larger than 1, is present no pure material, but a mixture of Freonen. The composition of such a mixture does not come out directly from the number sequence. For example R502 is a mixture from R22 and R115 too same parts.
