French west Africa was from 1895 to 1958 the name for the federation of the French possessions in west Africa. Up to nine territories belonged to this area; this were upperall the same Mauritania, Senegal, the French Sudan, the Niger, Guinea, Dahome, the Upper Volta, and the Niger as well as the Ivory Coast. Until 1902 was of Saint Louis capital of French west Africa, however from Dakar was then replaced. Highest manager was a governor general. 1958 became the colonies autonomous republics, with exception of Guinea, which decided for independence. At the time of its establishment the federation had about 10 million inhabitant and when its dissolution 25 million.
