French Polynesien, originally French Ozeanien (franz. Etablissements D' Oceanie), is a French overseas territory. It consists 00 ' south of an accumulation of smaller islands, atolls and archipelagoes in the southern Pacific for instance with 15"° and 140"° 00 ' west. The most well-known of the atolls is Mururoa, likewise well-known and the most densely populated island is Tahiti.

Geography

French Polynesien consists of altogether 118 islands and atolls, which belong to 5 archipelagoes:

  • Society islands (13 islands)
  • Tuamotu Archipelago (76 atolls)
  • Marquesasinseln (10 islands)
  • Austral islands (5 islands)
  • Gambierinseln (14 islands)

The islands distribute themselves on a water surface of approximately 4.000.000 km2, with a land surface of only somewhat more than 4,000 km2.

History

Tahiti was starting from 1842 French protectorate and starting from 1880 French colony, the other islands took France until 1881 in possession.

In September 1995 France released a world-wide protest wave with the resumption of the atomic tests on the Mururoa atoll after a three-year stop. The tests were broken off in January 1996.

Politics

In the years 2004 and 2005 the political situation of the country changed very strongly.

In May 2005 since many years governing, France faithful gas clay/tone fin and the Independist the OSCAR Temaru was voted out was selected to the new president.

In February 2004 in the French capital Paris a new autonomy statute for French Polynesien was decided. Among other things the official status of the area changed as French overseas territory (TOM= Territoire d'outre more mer) in (POM = pays d'outre more mer). The position of the local government and the local president was strengthened. France is in the future only responsible for foreign policy, law, defense, internal security and monetary system.

Changed also the composition of the local parliament, which consists now of 57 instead of 49 parliamentarians. The list strongest with the elections keeps automatically 30 % of the seats additional to the proportional voice portion. The entrance hurdle to the parliament was lowered of the voices delivered from 5 % to 3 %. The number of the constituencies was increased of 5 to 6.

The relationship to the European union is a divided. French Polynesien is not part of the European Union, its citizen is however French citizens, thereby also European Union citizens, and they are entitled to vote with elections to the European parliament. In addition the euro the past currency, the Polynesian franc is at the beginning of the yearly 2007, when replace official national currency. On the other hand the fundamentals of the European Union, like the free job choice, are not applicable in French Polynesien.

In French Polynesien there are three TV-transmitters: RFO speed RFO Polynsie of the transmitter France outre more mer and TNTV (Tahiti Nui TV).
