France occupied the regions Annam and Tongking after the French-Chinese war (1884-1885). The union Indochinoise, "French Indochina ", was created 1887 from Annam, Tongking and Cochinchina (those today the national territory of Viet Nam form), as well as the Khmer republic (today Kambodscha).

History

1893 were integrated also of Laos this colonial empire.

During 2. World war came it to the Japanese upper rule, which remained French troops as Kolonisatoren of the French Vichy regime by March 1945 in the country. In August 1945 Japan capitulated.

After the Frenchmen had attained again control in Indochina, it came increasingly to military conflicts with the communist Viet Minh, which were led by Ho Chi Minh. During the Second World War the USA supported the Viet Minh in the fight against the Japanese Besatzer. On 2 September 1945, after the emperor Bao Dai withdrew from his office, Ho Chi Minh was explained as the president of the "democratic republic by Viet Nam". However British, French and Chinese troops could re-establish the power of France in the area still in the same month, on which bloody fights broke loose. 1950 proclaimed Ho Chi Minh for the second time a "democratic republic", which was recognized by the communist States of China and the Soviet Union.

1954 suffered the French colonial army in the battle of serve Bien Phu a destroying defeat, on which the French influence decreased/went back in Indochina and the division of Viet Nam in a north and a Southern State was carried out. Still in the same year Indochina was extracted from the French union and confirmed on 20 July by the Indochinakonferenz (also Geneva Indochina conference) the full Kambodschas, Laos and Viet Nam.
