French India (frz. fran§ais de l'Inde) designates today's parts of India, those up to the center 20. Century French a colony formed. Capital is Pondicherry.

French India was 513 km largely and had 300,000 inhabitants (1949). Today the union territory possesses a size of 480 km and approx. 650,000 inhabitants.

French India consisted of the following parts:

  • Yanam (Yanaon, Godavaridelta; 1751 acquired)
  • Karaikal (K. and Pondicherry, 1738 acquired)
  • Pondicherry Karikal and P.; 1674 acquired)
  • (Malabarkste; 1721 acquired)
  • Chandannagar of Kolkata)

1673 began colonizing of Indian areas for France. 1949 came it to the popular vote over the whereabouts of French India as free cities in the French union or the connection at India, whereby Chandannagar decided as only for the connection. The remaining cities followed 1956 (state-legally 1962) and form today union territories.
