Francis Gary Powers (* 17 August 1929 in Jenkins, Kentucky, the USA; "† 1 August 1977 in Encino, Los Angeles, California, the USA) was an US-American pilot, who was shot during an espionage flight into the 1960er years by the Soviet air defense with Swerdlowsk, the Urals, with a then new air defense rocket.

Powers occurred 1950 the United States air Force (USAF) and after the training as the 468th Strategic Fighter Squadron (Turner air Force cousin, Georgia) as F-84-Pilot was shifted. It participated in employments in the Korea war, became however of the CIA because of its outstanding flights abgeworben. It left US air Force 1956 as Captain and entered into the U-2-Programm of the CIA. U-2-Piloten were inserted at that time to espionage flights over countries like the Soviet Union at that time, in order to provide aerial photos from military plants, units or other important structures to.

Gary Powers, which was stationed 1960 on the Incirlik air cousin/Turkey, became at the 1. May 1960 shot by a surface-to-air rocket during an espionage flight over the Soviet Union. He was taken prisoner and to three years prison as well as 7 years hard labour condemned. He did not have to serve the punishment however completely, since the following development occurred:

Rudolf Abel, a vorgeblicher painter and studio operator in the Fulton Street in Brooklyn/New York, was unmasked 1957 by the FBI as a KGB Colonel Rudolf Iwanowitsch Abel. Abel was a master pion, which worked since 1950 on behalf the Soviet secret service in New York as atomic pion. He was silent persistently both during his process and in the prison, published no information and rejected any co-operation with the American authorities. He was condemned to 30 years liberty withdrawal. Its actual client denied it, did not leave him however not in the pass.

The first agent exchange between east and west retarded, because the FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover regarded Abel as the larger catch and thought in such a way he first not of an exchange against Powers. And: It is sure that I will not remain ten years"Â… "on 10 February 1962 was it so far: Powers was led in the morning around 08:44 clock across the Glienicker bridge in potsdam/Berlin to the Americans. Six minutes later Rudolf Abel was transferred to the Soviets.

Francis Gary Powers died 1977, when its helicopter fell with Los Angeles. He was buried at the national cemetery Arlington.
