Francesco Maria Avellino (* 14 August 1778 in Neapel; "† 9. March 1850 ebenda) was an Italian classical archaeologist.

Francesco Maria Avellino was one of the most versatile scientists of its time. He was a lawyer, economist, poet, archaeologist, Numismatiker, Epigraphiker, Philologe and At the university of Neapel it held successively several chairs. First he was a professor of the right, afterwards for Greek literature, political economics and finally Roman right. Avellino was a president of the Accademia della Crusca and of the Accademia Ercolanese.

1832 it published a work with Progresso to the archaeology, in which it occurred for new methods. 1842 it justified the Bullettino archeologico Napoletano (Neapolitani archaeological newspaper). Between 1839 and 1850 he was excavation leader in Pompeji. It did particularly with its analyses of the findings out. With the lecture Osservazioni sopra alcune iscrizioni e disegni graffiti sulle mura di Pompei, whom he held for 1840 before the Accademia Ercolanese, it justified the use of a new source kind, the Graffiti. Avellino was also the answer generator of this source kind and first humans at all, which used the word. Between 1808 and 1814 he published a catalog of Italian coins.

To 5. March 1882 was set up during a Laudatio a held by Luigi Landolfi in honours Avellinos in Castelcapuano.
