Ford transit is a motor vehicle, which is manufactured by the European branch Ford engine company. It is produced since 1953 and is available as box cars, plank bed cars and minibuses.

History

While the transit in Great Britain became the best-selling small transporter, it reserved the second seat behind the VOLKSWAGEN bus in Germany in each case. The transit was more largely as its continuous competitor, by the front engine was better usable the loading space than with the VOLKSWAGEN bus until 1990. It sold itself nevertheless in Germany substantially more badly. At least in the first years it was considered as loud, a little durable, had lean equipment and bad suspension characteristics. Besides its image in the 1970er and 1980er suffered years under the prejudice that it - with curtains at the windows - was driven particularly by Turkish extended families. Also it never reached the cult factor VOLKSWAGEN of the bus; Lovers old transit are rare. But all numerous copies were sold to these adversities to the defiance, which did many years their service as workhorses courageously.

The transit came on 18 July 2005 in Southampton off the line and a charitable organization was donated. The transit is for 40 years the usually-sold light commercial motor vehicle in Europe.

Starting from May 2006 it will give the new transit with Ford the dealers.

First generation (1953-1965)

Transit (1953-1965)
The first generation transit starting from 1953 in Cologne was built and sold at first under the name fiber plastic 1000. Was developed the transporter of Alfred Haesner, which had before developed the VOLKSWAGEN bus in services of Volkswagen. In contrast to this the engine of the fiber plastic lies however in front 1000, whereby a continuous even loading area is available. Starting from 1961 the car receives the designation Taunus transit. As engines 4-Zylinder-Benzinmotoren of own manufacturing are used, the drive took place on the rear wheels. The production of the first generation ends 1965.

Second generation (1965-1978)

The second generation transit in England was designed and differs clearly from first. The vehicle at the location Langley (Berkshire, England, GB) became original manufactures, where in the Second World War of the fighter-bombers Hawker Hurricane was produced. Some years later production for capacity reasons was shifted to Southampton. At the same time the transit was produced also in Genk (Belgium).

A relationship to the VOLKSWAGEN bus was not recognizable any longer, besides the new transit was clearly more largely than the VOLKSWAGEN bus. The permissible total weight amounted to up to 3,25 t, these heavy vehicles received in the back dual tires. Contrary to its predecessor it acted around a Kurzhauber with a pronounced "lip".

In Great Britain the transit replaced Ford the Thames, a somewhat smaller vehicle, which was economically not very successful. The transit was in Europe right after the introduction on the market very successful, since it was among other things quite broad and an American appearance had. Also the competition could not offer so a variety at variants (plank bed car, box car, minibus short/long wheel base etc.). Motorizing took place either via an Essex V4-Aggregat (Benziner 1,7 and 2,0) or an Perkins aggregate with 31 KW (Diesels). The rear wheels were propelled over a sheet-fitted with springs Starrachse.

1971 were easily revised the transit. For the drive starting from 1972 also diesel engines are available, which are however larger than the carburetor engines, so that the front must be adapted accordingly.

Third generation (1978-1985)

With the third generation Ford presented 1978 again a revised transit; the basic principle (Kurzhauber) remained existing however. It became the organization (v. A. the front portion) as well as and the interior equipment revises a new motorizing imported (Pinto from the Cortina instead of Essex V4). In addition the Essex-V6-Motor became higher performance (3,0 l-V6), in order to make the vehicle for emergency services and police more interesting. In the year 1981 one could transit-club-mobilely with the dealer orders. Saliently at this vehicle were the interior equipment with hochflorigem carpet and swivelling seats as well as portholes for the rear and deeply down pulled large windows for the middle group of seats. To that one could select 7-Zoll-Ronal-Alufelgen on 245/60x14-Reifen with power steering or a Overdrive transmission or the auxiliary trunk for the roof. Today most transit the diesel engines have. Between gasoline and diesel engined vehicles optically no more difference exists. 1983 gave it an easy Facelift.

Fourth generation (1986-2000)

The fourth generation came 1986 on the market and fell by a serious reorganization of the body on ("from a casting ", hood and windshield had the same angle of incidence). 1995 received the transit a renewed Facelift as well as a new petrol engine (DOHC 16 V of the Pinto).

The Olsenbande drove Ford a transit, year of construction in its last cinema caper 1986.
