Ford Taunus (model)

1970 were then revived the name Taunus. As far as 1982 the Ford models of the middle class carried it. Ford Taunus the German sister model of the English Ford Cortina is, therefore also the designation "TC". Taunus and Cortina of the first TC-series differ outwardly from each other (pronounced with the Cortina, larger scoop on the hood with the Taunus) and technically by motorizing. With the series starting from model year '76 the exterior was then and it differences itself only through right - and/or left-hand steering. The Taunus was offered as two and four-door sedan, of the first TC-series, which were built 1970-1975, gave it also a two-door "nearly-bakes" - Likewise also a tournament (combination) was available. The possible equipment variants and designations differ depending upon construction period area: Standard (equipment variant below L), L, XL, GXL and GT with the first TC-series, became standard, L, GL, GLS, and Ghia with the successors. Offered as motorizing in Cologne built 4-Zylinder row engines with cam shaft (OHC), lying above, which from the engine of the American Ford Pinto had been developed, as well as when desired with likewise Sechzylinder v engines built in Cologne. Standard was a manual Vier-Gang-Getriebe, when desired was starting from the 1,6-Liter-Motoren also a three-course automatic transmission available.

During itself the first model, also Knudsen Taunus mentioned (after His Excellency Knudsen, Vorstandsvorsitzender with Ford, which lent the characteristic front portion and scoop on the hood to the first Taunus), clearly of its smoothed successors takes off, differs the two last model rows TC '76 and TC '80 particularly by the organization of the front portion (changed radiator grille with the TC '80 with large plastic lamellas and around the edges pulled turn signals), the tail (the TC '80 possesses broader tail lamps than the TC '76) as well as in the proportions of the body: the TC '80 possesses a higher passenger space than the TC '76.

Ford Taunus TC of the 1. Series was presented in September 1970 (model year 1971). Five equipment variants were to be had: Standard, L, angehauchte XL, the sportily opened GT, and as Topmodell of the GXL.

All variants were available as two or four-door sedan, the combination gave it only as standard, L or XL, and the elegant was not available in standard version.

Standard, L (in series equipped with round headlights, which should take it off from the better models) and XL (angular headlights) were in series with a 1300cm - OHC LC Vierzylinder equipped, which carried out 55 HP. When desired there was also a 1600cm - OHC HC- engine of same design, which 72 HP carried out (later even with lower compression and 68 HP available). GT and GXL were in series likewise with a 1600cm - OHC HC- engine equipped, which brought however (among other things due to fan elbow union and another carburetor) 88 HP. They possessed in addition a "more sportily co-ordinated" chassis as well as a more efficient brake assembly with larger drum brakes at the rear axle and came with ex factory with extras like e.g. a subject in the center console, sport steering wheel, halogen auxiliary lights and auxiliary instruments (tachometer, oil pressure) etc. when desired were with these models also a Zweiliter-V6-Motor with 90 HP available, to which already from the 20m-Modellen of the 60's admits was (series P5). At the end of of 1971 was then available as new point motorizing 2.3 a Liter-V6-Motor, which was in its design equal to with the two-litre and accelerated with its 108 HP the Taunus on at that time considerable 175km/h. Due to serious quality faults with the early vehicles the Taunus of the General German Automobile Association got the "silver lemon", which lent price for serious lack of new vehicle. The autotesters at that time criticized also the altogether spongelike, unkomfortable chassis as well as the unclear instrument panel, which in its Design that one of the 1969er Ford Mustang resembles.

Taunus TC '74 (Facelift)

  • Construction period area 09/1973 12/1974

  • 1.3Ltr, 55PS, OHC (4 cylinder row engine)
  • 1,6Ltr, 72PS, OHC (4 cylinder row engine)
  • 1,6Ltr, 88PS, OHC (4 cylinder row engine)
  • 2,0Ltr, 90PS, V6 (6 cylinders V-engine)
  • 2,3Ltr, 108PS, V6 (6 cylinders V-engine)

1973 were transformed the Taunus according to the points of criticism of the press: the instrument panel was again co-ordinated completely "soberly and functionally" again-arranged (and maintained in this form also in the Taunus'76), the chassis and equipped in series with front and rear stabilizers, which the handling a little improved. Outwardly little, all models possessed uniformly a flat black plastic radiator grille with angular headlights, but got now standard and L changed instead of a coat of arms in the center of the radiator a Ford signature of which in the radiator grille on the driver's side to find now was. The equipment variant GT was omitted, but the XL received now a tachometer as well as the 2l V6 when desired, and the GXL received outwardly different, broader trim and inside genuine wood for instrument panel and door linings.

  • 1,6Ltr, 88PS, OHC (4 cylinder row engine)
  • 2,0Ltr, 90PS, V6 (6 cylinders V-engine)
  • 2,3Ltr, 108PS, V6 (6 cylinders V-engine)

To model year 1975 the Taunus was again revised. With the simple models standard and L were now flat black the trim around the windows, the crowned coats of arms with the indication of capacity at the front fenders yielded sober numbers, which became Ford coat of arms on the radiator grille now with all models by a simple "Ford" - signature replaces. The Ford signature on the rear flap, that so far the entire width took and with XL and GXL as broad aluminum border implemented, moved in reduced form the left upper corner of the Kofferaumdeckels, the rope US signature instead of in swung script as with the earlier models, now in simple type characters was implemented. The combination, which was called now instead of tournament "spare time Taunus", was to be had now also with GXL equipment.

To the turn of the year 75/76 the new model was then presented, which was smoothed outwardly, but technically still much together with the TC of the first series had: the Taunus TC '76.
