Ford Scorpio is of passenger cars of the upper middle class built by Ford Germany. He was built in three body versions (notchback, flow tail, combination):

Scorpio "´85:

  • 1985 were introduced the Scorpio as a successor Ford of the Granada and were first available excluding as flow tail (so-called "aero tail").
  • 1986 were introduced the Scorpio 4x4 with all-wheel drive and 2,8l-V6-Motor.
  • 1990 came, together with some detail changes, the classical sedan (notchback variant) on the market.

On the British islands the Scorpio up to the model change 1994 kept the name "Granada", the Top version as "Granada Scorpio" was only sold.

Scorpio "´92:

  • 1992 were provided the Scorpio with a Facelift and offered additionally as combination - with Ford traditionally "tournament" mentioned -.

Scorpio "´95:

  • In 1994 (to model year 1995, therefore Scorpio "´95) the appearance of the Scorpios was completely revised. The Scorpio was only offered now as notchback and tournament.
  • 1998 were adjusted the Scorpio after a further, smaller Facelift without a successor.

The attitude had been already decided at the time of the conception of the Scorpio "´95, there one 1999 a successor from the USA (Lincoln LS series) to import wanted and the world-wide authority center in the upper segment with Ford the USA to be settled should.

Of Ford the Scorpio were produced and sold between 1985 and 1998 850,000 pieces. (Of the predecessor series Consul and Granada were produced between 1972 to 1985 1.6 million pieces). As motorizing - depending upon model and year of construction - petrol engines between 1,8 and 2,9 litres capacity were offered. Additionally a 2,5l diesel set (first an Peugeot engine, later a VM-Diesel) was offered. Particularly frequently the 1989 imported DOHC engine with 120 HP (the 1992 for insurance-technical reasons on 115 HP one throttled) and the 2,9-Liter-V6 with 145 HP sold. Starting from 1991 Top motorizing with a 2.9i-24V-Motor of the engine motorenschmiede Cosworth was available. This engine with 195 HP (1991-94) and/or 207 HP (1994-98) was exclusively available with automatic transmission. The "Scorpio 24V" was positioned as comfortable travel sedan, therefore the name Cosworth in the model designation does not emerge. By the 24V engine between 92-94 approx. 1115 pieces were built, concerned a small series production. To 01.01.2006 was certified still 444 vehicles of this type (Scorpio 24V) in Germany.

starting from 1985:2,5 - litre Peugeot Diesel (69 HP), late turbo-Diesel; 1,8-Liter-OHC-Vergasermotor (90 HP); 2,0-Liter-OHC-Vergasermotor (105 HP); 2,0-Liter-OHC-Einspritzmotor (115 HP); 2,0-Liter-OHC-Einspritzmotor with regulated catalyst (100 HP); 2,8-Liter-V6-Einspritzmotor (150 HP);

starting from 1987:2,4 - Liter-V6-Einspritzmotor with regulated catalyst (125 HP); 2,4-Liter-V6-Einspritzmotor without Kat (130 HP); 2,9-Liter-V6-Einspritzmotor with regulated catalyst (145 HP); 2,9-Liter-V6-Einspritzmotor without Kat (150 HP);

starting from 1989:2,0 - litre DOHC fuel injection engine with regulated catalyst (120 HP)

starting from 1991:2,9 i-24V-Cosworth-BOA-Einspritzmotor with regulated catalyst (195 HP)

starting from 1992:2,5 - litre VM Turbodiesel (115 HP)

Engines Scorpio "´95:

starting from 1994:2,5 - litre VM Turbodiesel (115 HP); 2,0-Liter 8V fuel injection engine with more ger. Kat (115 HP) 2,0-Liter-DOHC-16V-Einspritzmotor with regulated catalyst (136 HP); 2,9-Liter-V6-Einspritzmotor with regulated catalyst (150 HP) (only few months); 2,9i-24V-Cosworth-BOB-Einspritzmotor with regulated catalyst (207 HP);

Starting from 1997:2,3 - Liter-DOHC-16V-Einspritzmotor with regulated catalyst (147 HP); 2,5-Liter-VM-Turbodiesel (125 HP) fulfills exhaust standard euro 2

Equipment variants (exemplary):

Scorpio "´85: CL - ABS, servo, ZV; GL - additionally eFH in front, tachometer, central arm rest in front; GHIA - additionally lighting package, starting from 87 eFH in the back, high-quality Velours, large ramming protection strips outside at the doors.

Scorpio "´92: CL became CLX - with somewhat more standard equipment (e.g. tachometer); GL became GLX; Ghia remained Ghia; Special models like e.g. Topas - to recognize by bright seat center sections and special external colors

Scorpio "´95: only Scorpio (basis model) and Scorpio Ghia (among other things central arm rest in front, climate, lighting package).

The anti-skid system (ABS) had been offered of different manufacturing since already 1978 as very expensive, surcharge-requiring option. Ford Scorpio 1985 were however the first mass production passenger car in Europe, which was offered with standard ABS. Starting from model year 1994 driver and front seat passenger Airbag were standard.

The mark Ford is today into a multi-mark strategy of the Ford company merged, with which "the upper segment is predominantly covered "by the company marks Volvo and Jaguar. The Jaguar S-type applies thus from manufacturer view as indirect successors of the Scorpio. Besides many Scorpiofahrer turned to the smaller middle class vehicle Ford Mondeo.
