As successor of the jeeps of the Second World War (Willys MT and/or Ford GPW) and the following advancements (M38 and M38A1) Ford MUTT M151 (Miltary utility Tactical Truck) one introduced. Even if Ford M151 to his predecessors is outwardly very similar, then it is nevertheless a completely again developed vehicle. Contrary to its predecessors it does not have a leader framework with Starrachsen/leaf springs and put on body, but a so-called Unibody, a rising up body with independent suspension and coil springs.
Generally one calls only all vehicles with Willys origin jeep, Ford MUTT not as jeep is led
Ford Mutt (internal designation of US Army: M151 Series) was supplied in the years from 1964 to 1986 about 100,000 pieces for different armies, the largest part received US Army. The M151 was procured as replacement for the M38 Willys jeep as well as for the original Willys jeep from the Second World War.
In the employment became the new M151 its strong engine, the direct steering element, the new suspension and the relative to easy weight soon the calamity. Particularly with the model A1 with its rear triangle steering wheels it came to innumerable estimates with many hurt ones and dead ones.
When reaction to this constructionally problematic rear axle became finally the a2 variant developed, which possessed diagonal steering wheels instead of the triangle steering wheels. Nevertheless it came further to accidents. US Army decided therefore, among other things for legal reasons that a M151 was to never come into civilian hands. Therefore all superseded vehicles were cut first with the torch. When however it admits became that these cut vehicles were partly welded together by private individuals again was completely divided, the vehicles and destroyed then with bulldozers the bodies completely. For this reason private MUTTs is quite rare, but it gives nevertheless some in civilian hands.
With the Army was the participation in an instructional film demonstration over "the jeep dangers "obligation, before one was allowed to move these vehicles. This and the circumstance that the jeeps had no armoring and were easily open to attack, arranged US Army to supersede and replace by the new Humvee in the context of its renewal program the M151 gradually. The jeep, once the most famous vehicle of the US army, had done its obligation.
Today one sees it often in private hand, in addition, still at different armies, as e.g. in Israel. US Army has still some M151 for nostalgic reasons in its existence.
