The prehistory

Of Ford reentrance into racing

In the year 1962 Henry Ford II wanted to enter again into international racing, in order to use at the beginning of the 1960er years ever more popular becoming long-distance running in Le Mans and Indianapolis for the advertisement of its own cars. Straight ones at the young people continued to rise these meetings ever in the favour. At this time the Europeans dominated clearly in this field, not least, because the American car manufacturers had decided 1957 voluntarily to a retreat from the engine haven. This circumstance deflected itself however negatively on the image of the automark, was considered nevertheless a successful employment in racing always as convincing proof for engineer art and reliability. One wanted straight these values with itself the entrance (and planned success) into running Le Mans ergattern.

History of the development Ford of the GT40 (1965-1968)

In order to be able to ride along as fast as possible around front places, Henry Ford II wanted the complete company Ferrari to buy. The initial negotiations with Enzo Ferrari started well. When however "IL explained Commendatore ", he wanted to lead the future running department of "Ford Ferrari ", which should be called then also still Ferrari Ford, rejected Ford. In May 1963 the purchase burst then finally, when Enzo announced Ferrari that Ferrari would not stand for no more to the sales. The building of the GT40 can be seen thus as retaliation, why Ford decided, a its own, to place ambitious sport program on the legs and to strike Ferrari at the 24 hours from LeMans to. But in Slough, England, a special development team was used. One insured oneself the assistance of Eric Broadley (inclusive his prototypes Lola with Ford-V8-Motor) and obligated thereafter John Wyer (in former times Aston Martin) as a director/conductor of the program. The result was 1964 the GT40.1965 decided one however to bring a begrentzte number of items into the sales. The Mk 1 was sold in the running kit, which should Mk 3 if necessary as toy for a pair rich men is sold. The name GT40 decreased/went back simply and simply to the height of the car, it amounted to exactly 40 tariff. Under the bulligen body was a stable framework from steel. In the prototypes a 4,2-Liter-V8 with Colotti transmission of Ford the USA, the road versions worked had against it 4,7-Liter-Motoren (always inserted before the rear axle) and ZF-transmission.

Ford finally needed a new 7-Liter-Motor for the Mk 2, in order to win 1966 in LeMans and/or a completely new Design (Mk 4 or "J "), in order to repeat the victory 1967. Later versions won also 1968 and 1969. The running flounders were about 320 km/h fast.

Production began at the beginning of of 1965 in Slogh, nearly all models in the next three years was manufactured there. Only one handful of copies with valid road permission was sold. Disadvantages of the GT40 were the weak ventilation and the bad all-round visibility. Altogether 124 pieces, of it and ten Mk 4 were built for twelve prototypes. Ford speaks seven Mk 3 and 31 Mk 1 for the road of 94 Serienwagen, of it was reequipped.

What should become now from the hochtrabenden One needed a really fast car, one, which could drive over 300 km/h, and which could be even after 24 hours with an average of over 200 km/h still reliable and fast.

The new edition Ford of the GT40

In the year 2002 Ford showed an inheriting Ford of the GT40 on a motor show. With modern technology and hardly changed appearance one presented now Ford GT the cars mentioned. For two different reasons one did to 40 without the additive "". First of all Ford the rights at the name had itself "GT40 "never secured. With the demand of 40 million US Dollar of the owner did not want to deal Ford. Secondly the new car 43 tariff did not turn out highly, thus the designation any longer would have been suitable.

Ford GT a reproduction is outward in the Retro Design, however the car is technically seen a complete new development of Ford.
