The Folsom expedition of 1869 was the first expedition in the area of the today's Yellowstone national park. It was accomplished by David E. Folsom, Charles W. Cook and William Peterson. Folsom and Cook made themselves written notes, which were classified however after the return as so improbable that they were only printed in the Western Monthly of magazines in Chicago. Nevertheless 1870 a second expedition already followed into the Yellowstone area, the Washburn Langford Doane expedition, which confirmed the descriptions of Folsom and Cook.
Folsom, Cook and Peterson had announced themselves for a publicized expedition of F. Meagher to governor Thomas. After its unexpected death and after the army Begleittruppe could not abkommandieren, they decided as only to accomplish the expedition also without military protection.
They entered the today's park area on 13 September 1869 in the north and partly followed the Yellowstone River up to the Yellowstone Lake. Along the northwest bank traveled they far up to the Shoshone Lake. There they turned after northwest and penetrated in the main area of the Geysire. The Madison River following they left the area today's Yellowstone national park on 3 October.
Together with three riding and two luggage horses led they Feuerwaffen including ammunition, covers, measurers, heel and shovel, axe, fishing rod things, small boiler, one Kaffekanne, two Bratpfannen, table-ware and with itself. In addition Cook had field glasses thereby, Folsom a Taschenkompass and thermometers and Peterson of two cord balls.
After the return Folsom gave detailed information about the Yellowstone region to general Henry Dana Washburn. This arranged in the following year a second expedition into the area.
