The title Fellow (English on an equal footing one and/or companion) designates (not in the legal sense) to the body belonging a member in the anglo-saxon university enterprise. Therefore a Fellow is a scholar in the British academic linguistic usage, who of a university or university is financially supported for the purpose of the research and/or teachings. However not all these people keep real the title "Fellow", and it is difficult to give accurate data concerning the application of this title. In the newer universities research scholarships, which are nearly always interCIM places, are awarded those, which have a graduation procedure behind itself. (Younger ones are normally appointed as research assistants; University graduates with durable salaries are appointed frequently lectors.)
In the older British universities many Fellows notice pastorale responsibilities for the students of their universities. E.G. belong at the university Cambridge Fellows to the oldest academic university personnel, this are not only responsible for teachings, research and the pastorale concern of the studying, it educate also an advice, in order to support the master (or according to e.g. the director of the Homerton college, Cambridge).
Also the members of some German research establishments, as e.g. become the Wissenschaftskollegs Berlin or the CESifo in Munich as "Fellows" designation. A further example is the international atomic energy organization, in which guest scientists from the member states are designated as "Fellows" and for the time of their stay received from the IAEO payments.
