Federations are groups of individuals (natural person) or bodies (legal entity) of all kinds, which united in the legal form of an association voluntarily for the pursuit of common purposes and a firm internal organisational structure to usually have. Federations bundle the interests of the individual members for the reaching of a common goal or value conceptions (see group of interests). They exist and act in all company areas. Social and political science differentiate between various feature ways of the federations. Economics, occupation and science federations, culture and sport federations, social and welfare organisations - also political parties and trade unions, chambers and defense associations (GEMA, quality protection associations etc.) rank among it. As cross section organization for all federations the German society for federation management functions registered association (DGVM).

Often federations arise from monopolistic positions. To that extent an elevated social meaning is attached to them. Trade unions and employers can negotiate for example collective agreements. Consumer and environmental protection federations enjoy the privilege of the federation complaint in consumer protection and environmental affairs. The characteristic of voluntariness differentiates associations and federations from the chambers for trades and free occupations, with which a legal obligation membership exists.
