The federation of the automobile industry registered association (VDA) with seat in Frankfurt is the largest common syndicate of the German automakers and its supplier.

In the public the VDA is well-known as an organizer of the every two years taking place international motor show (IAA) in Frankfurt. Its actual tasks are however the protection of interests, exchange of views between the members and the development of standards as for instance recommendations for logistic procedures of industrial companies or the de-facto-standard for EDI in the German automobile industry.

The VDA is mentioned member in the European combination of the automobile industry, Odette.

Today practically everyone of the German car manufacturers and concomitantly the supporting industry EDI begin, whereby however the original basic standards of the VDA separation features show. In the course of the globalization also the German enterprises change over ever more to EDIFACT. The VDA is however also here endeavored around a standardisation, after which only certain message types of the EDIFACT are to be used. The exhaustion of the entire message possibilities of the EDIFACT would lead again to drifting apart and the standardization of data exchange against would work.
