The Federal Office for population protection and disaster relief (BBK) developed at the 1. May 2004 by separating from the office for federal administration and is responsible for the civil defense of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is subordinate officially to the Federal Minister of the Interior and its president is Christoph Unger. The service seat is in the urban district Bad Godesberg of the federal city Bonn.

Tasks

The BBK has the task to guarantee and coordinate the civilian and disaster control in Germany.

Tasks, fields of activity and coordination of:

• Self protection
• Disaster alerting of the population over the warning offices
• Building of protection
• Residence regulation
• Disaster control
• Civil defense research, ABC protection/precaution
• Fortbildungstelle at the academy for crisis management, emergency planning and civil defense (AKNZ)
• Measures for the protection of the health
• Measures to the protection of cultural property (for this the BBK in the Barbarastollen operates with Oberried a central collecting point.)
• Hosten German emergency precaution information system (DeNIS)
• Common announcing and situation layer (GMLZ)
• Specialized information centre for the civilian and disaster control (FIS)
• central place for the coordination of aftercare, victim and member assistance (NOAH)

History of the civil defense authorities

The history of this organization is coined/shaped of frequent renaming. Seat of all authorities is Bonn bath Godesberg

1952 are furnished the subsection civilian air protection in the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

1955 are transferred the Refert into the Federal Institution for civilian air protection.

1957 are subordinated this institute of the federal agency for civilian population protection.

1958 become from this agency the Federal Office for civilian population protection

1974 are renamed it in Federal Office for civil defense.

2001 is transferred the tasks of the federal office by the budget reorganization law from 1999 the office for federal administration. The tasks are noticed by the central office for civil defense.

At the 1. May 2004 is expenditure-created the Federal Office for population protection and disaster relief the central office for civil defense, after inadequacies resulted in the case of the disaster control and research.
