The Federal Office for calibration and surveying (BEV) is responsible in Austria for the official measurement. Its field covers the following articles:

• Guidance of the property land register in Austria: The land registers is the planliche representation of all properties in Austria and is present surface covering in digital form. It serves as accompanying element for the land register.
• Creation and preservation of the official survey points (situation and Lagefestpunkte, which serve as starting points for property measurements, must be available in the settled area in distances from approx. 700 to 1200 m.
• Guidance of the digital landscape and area elevator model and the name data base GEONAM Austria
• Production of the official Austrian maps: the following map works are manufactured and resumed constantly:
  • Austrian map 1:50.000 (and in enlargement 1:25.000)
  • Austrian map 1:200.000
  • Austrian map 1:500.000
  • Orthophotos and Luftbildkarten

The maps are offered with different contents (with way markings or with road print) in printed form. In digital form they are available on Compact Disc and in the Internet.

• Measurement and clerical works in connection with the state border
• Guidance "national metrology of the institute" (NMI), which measuringnormal makes available according to the SI-UNIT system.
• Physical-technical test service for the technical execution of the measuring and examination of measuring instruments. This task is transferred since 1 June 2004 gradually to private companies and institutions, which are constantly examined received from the Federal Office an accreditation and.

For the execution of the tasks the BEV beside the central mechanisms for the fundamental tasks in Vienna maintains branch offices in completely Austria. These are led as land surveying offices and/or calibration and land surveying offices (full functionality) or as information centers (only for party traffic, giving information).

Additionally there are regulations in numerous other laws over the surveying (forest law, soil estimation law etc.) and over calibrationlegal interests (time counting law, pre-packaging regulation etc.)
