The Federal association of German banks (BdB) is the protection of interests of the private banks in the Federal Republic of Germany. It has the legal form of a registered association.

The BdB was created 1951 in Cologne as a successor organization of the cent ral federation of the German bank and banker trade existing up to the end of the Second World War. 1999 were shifted the seat to Berlin. Besides the BdB maintains an office in Brussels and is member of the European Banking Federation.

The federation represents approx. 230 private credit institutes. Public banks represent their interests by the Federal association of public banks of Germany The relationship between the two federations is of competition coined/shaped, in particular there the BdB for a reduction of the state ratio in the banking occurs and a reduction of the indirect subsidy of public banks demands. Besides the BdB represents demands to the bureaucracy dismantling, for the reduction of the national indebtedness and for European integration.

The BdB is carrier of the insert contingency fund for accounts at the member banks, publishers of the technical periodical the bank and for it the attached banks a procedure for the conciliation of customer complaints with a neutral Ombudsmann and including consumer federations created, whose result for the member banks is binding. The BdB is owner bank publishing house, a service bureau of the private banks.

The federation is led by a on three years selected executive committee. The executive committee seats are divided under the banks after categories. The five German major banks place one member each, the private bankers two, the district banks two, the mortgage banks and the foreign banks one member of the board each. Beyond that the managing director of the BdB is strength of office member of the board. From this executive committee one president and two deputies are selected. It is tried to let the office for president between the major banks and the private and/or district banks alternate but this rule is rarely kept.
