The Federal Agency for flight accident investigation (BFU) is the national investigation place for Germany, demanded after the European Union guideline 94/56/EG from 21 November 1994 over the principles for the investigation of accidents and disturbances in the civil aviation.
The federation place has its seat in Braunschweig and by a director is led.
Over the guideline into German right to convert, was created the flight accident investigation law (FlUUG) and set on 1 September 1998 into force. The past general administrative regulation for the technical investigation of flight accidents with the enterprise of aircraft was replaced by this law.
At the same time with the coming into force of the FlUUG the Federal Agency was established to the Federal Ministry for traffic, building and housing directly subordinate federal upper authority as independent. Before the flight accident investigation was task of the Federal Office of Aviation, department of flight accident investigation place (FUS).
The FlUUG plans that the Federal Agency determines independently flight accidents and heavy disturbances, in particular without influencing control examined of third, and their causes. In order to ensure this, the Federal Agency can be attained for the admission of reports by means of accidents and disturbances in air traffic around the clock.
