A false alarm (also: Deception alarm) is an erroneous alerting of auxiliary workers or of the police, which leads to no or no necessary employment. This concerns alarm releases without actual requirement. The correct name for reads however wrong alarm since a false alarm means literally the absence and/or a being missing of an alarm. Colloquially however the term became generally accepted false alarm.

A wrong alarm can be classified as follows:

• Blind alarm and/or technical alarm: The fire alarm is defective or e.g. by electromagnetic fields (EMV) was disturbed.
• Bad-willing alarm: Released due to an intentional effect without actual requirement an alarm, e.g. at a push-button-actuated fire alarm or by hair sprays.
• Deception alarm: The fire alarm and/or the alarm installation was deceived by effects, which are similar to a material danger, e.g. cigarette smoke, welding or kitchen steams. For this also an alerting counts due to an be missing-Inge-estimated perception.

It sometimes also occurs that transmission errors are reason for a Falschalalarm (incompetence concerning the place of work or wrong acceptance). The wrong alarm can concern also several organizations, e.g. the police, fire-brigades or also security agencies.

With a wrong alarm it concerns an example of a wrong classification. In the danger teachings one calls this kind of the danger appearance danger.

Depending upon the reason for those the release of a wrong alarm it is either punishable or only liable to pay the costs or free of charge for the causer. Persons, those vorwerfbar a wrong alarm release are always compensation requiring and possibly criminally responsible (in Germany e.g. "§"§ 145, 145d StGB). Wrong alarms save also the danger of a habituation of the alarmed person's groups and thereby are possibly no longer seriously taken.

At the fire-brigade is a frequent cause that a fire alarm with so-called hot work for example welding are not switched off. In the case of reversal it comes in addition, to genuine fires without alarm, because such fire alarms are not in time again re-activated after the work.

A further kind of alarm without case of emergency are test alarms, which must be indicated before at the local police.
