When electronic conduct of operations, (short form EW, English electronics of throwing acres (EW), to use in the CH army EKF) military measures designated, which use the electromagnetic spectrum to understand in order to look for e.g. electromagnetic radiant emittances, these and identify, or electromagnetic radiant emittances in order to refuse to an opponent its use of the electromagnetic spectrum or deceive it and to ensure with it at the same time the use by own forces.

Description

The strategic meaning is to be estimated as very high. The measures are directed against the so-called C3I (COMMAND, control, Communications and Intelligence) infrastructure, without which a modern war is not conductible.

The measures of EW distinctive in:

• Communications and electronic clearing-up (FmEloAufKl) (English signal Intelligence (SIGINT)). The communications clearing-up (English Communication Intelligence COMINT) seizes wireless communication links and evaluates these. The electronic clearing-up (English electronics Intelligence ELINT) is directed against detection and control systems and evaluated these. Primarily information about radar device is worked on.

• Electronic support measures (EloUM) (English electronics support Measures (ESM)) exist in the passive use of the electromagnetic spectrum, in order to receive information about other forces in the operational area for direct tactical actions. These information can serve e.g. as basis for the employment of artillery fire, or air raids, in addition, for electronic counter and/or preventive measures. In addition they supplement communications and electronic clearing-up.

• Electronic counter measures (ECM) (English electronics Counter Measures (ECM)). These contain the active use of the elektomagnetischen spectrum, in order to prevent thereby its use by an opponent to be deceptive e.g. by breakdown measures (English "Jamming") or it.

• Electronic preventive measures (ECCM) (English electronics Protective Measures (EPM) are all the effect of hostile electronic counter measures decreasing activities. Active electronic preventive measures contain technical solutions regarding the transmission (e.g. radios with "frequency jump procedure, frequency hopping") or regarding the transferred data (Kryptografie). Examples of passive electronic preventive measures are stricter special training of the personnel or observance "radio discipline".

Electronic counter measures and active electronic preventive measures can be recognized by the opposite side by their radiant emittance. Electronic support measures however can be used, without an opponent notices these. The strategic addition - signal-seizing clearing-up (English signal Intelligence (SIGINT consists of ELINT, as electronics Intelligence as well as COMINT, for Communications Intelligence)) - one operates by most well prepared nations, in order to receive information about electronic equipment and procedure, as well as intentions of a potential opponent.

Employment with the German Federal Armed Forces

In the army there are no more autonomously applicable EW forces. The navy of being subordinate clearing-up ships (fleet service boats) by the command strategic clearing-up are likewise used. In addition the combat ships of the navy have autonomous EW systems (FL1800 II, Octopus, DR2000, Sarie).
