In "the regulation (EEC) No. 2092/91 of the advice from 24 June 1991 over the ecological agriculture and the appropriate marking of the agricultural products and food "(European regulation, European regulation or also regulation) is defined, how agricultural products and food, which are characterized as products, must be produced and manufactured. She ties IFOAM, in which about 750 federations are organized over 108 nations out at the basis guidelines of the international combination of the ecological agriculture movements.

In order to guarantee a clear distinction too conventionally, thus biologically not manufactured food, the European protects explicitly the terms , biologically/ecologically, controlled ecologically/biologically, biological/ecological agriculture, biological-dynamically as well as biological-organically. These protected terms may be used exclusively for products, which correspond to the criteria of the European at least.

Of it excluded is at present still some food, whose registered trade marks with the word component were registered "bio "before the entry into force of the regulation. They may carry this designation up to the year 2006 further, even if they are not biologically produced. Examples of products, to which this special arrangement still applies, are "Bioghurt ", "biofit "and "bio reform ".

To food, which added from several is compound, the following marking regulation applies:

  • If the product consists to at least 95% of bio production, the designation biological and/or ecological may be led.
  • If less than 95% are, but at least 70% added ecologically produced, these may be marked in the effort list as such - usually by an asterisk and a footnote.

The regulation regulates also the import of ecological products from third countries.

1999 were supplemented the European around the regulation EEC No. 1804/1999, which regulates the raising, marking and control of the most important animal species. Genetically changed organisms and from it manufactured products may not be used in the agriculture and in the processing of bio food.
