The European one Gendarmerietruppe (English European Gendarmerie Force (EGF), franz. Force de gendarmerie (FGE or Eurogendfor)) a European military police troop in the structure (see Gendarmerie, military police) is, which is to serve the crisis management.
The suggestion for the European Gendarmerietruppe was made by the French defense minister, Michelle Alliot Marie, in September 2003. The contract was finally closed by the defense Ministers of the five European Union members France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands on 17 September 2004 in Noordwijk (the Netherlands). Other countries can join the European Gendarmerietruppe in the future.
The troop has its seat in Vicenza, in northeast Italy and has a core of 800-900 members. For the reinforcement further 2300 men is available. It is still uncertain, when the European Gendarmerietruppe will become active.
In Germany the prohibition of the employment of the armed forces fixed in the Basic Law opposes such a troop on the inside.
