An envelope (also: Cover or Couvert) is the packaging of a letter.

Originally letters were packed not separately, but protected by Umfalten and/or rolling up and sealing against unauthorized access.

There are envelopes in different standard sizes, defined in ISO 269 and DIN 678 to a large extent on the basis existing paper formats:

C5162 229A5 or A4 once folded

In Germany are for business letters on of the DIN long envelope (DL) and C4 furthest spreads. Private post office is sent away frequently also in C6, into which postcards (A6 = 105 148 mm) fit.

Envelopes are locked, as the little overlapping over-folded open side with the envelope is stuck. Dry, water-soluble are used stick, which is moistened when locking. Self adhesive envelopes are frequently used particularly in the public employment. On the exterior of the cover on the front name and address of the addressee are written, on the back the data concerning the sender.

Likewise within the public range window covers are frequent. In the case of its use the address of the addressee is not written on the envelope, but the letter with the address in the letterhead is put in such a way into the envelope that the address is visible by the window. Window covers carry a print or a stamp with the sender data usually on the front.

For opening the Kuvertes there is a special tool, the letter-opener.
