Engine works Esslingen AG (ME) (engine works Esslingen AG) an enterprise was for the production of locomotives, streetcars, railway carriages, roll supports, course-technical equipment (turntables, sliding stages), bridges, steel above ground structures, pumps and boilers.

The establishment by Emil Kessler took place at the 11. March 1846 in Stuttgart had preceded, an initiative of the Kingdom of to creation at that time of a railway industry independent of the foreign country. Emil Kessler brought relevant experience from Karlsruhe also, where it was since 1837 partners, starting from 1842 sole owners of a engine works.

The foundation-stone of the new work in Esslingen at the Neckar became to 4. May 1846 put, one year later, in October 1847, is delivered as stipulated the first locomotive to the royally state railways, K.W.St.E..

The enterprise acquired itself a very good reputation, first in in, increasingly however also abroad. Several assumptions of other companies (engine works Gebr. Decker & CO, machine & boiler factory G. Kuhn), the establishment of the "Costruzioni Meccaniche Saronno" (Italy) as well as 1913 the building of a new work with Mettingen witnessed from success.

An episode remained already 1852 taken up and 1858 the again adjusted building by inland waterway crafts, which contributed however to the fact that the economic crisis period could be overcome after 1848. 50 Danube boats, 2 Neckardampfer, 2 Bodensee steamers and 2 Bodensee tractors were the result of this quite successful activity.

Around 1885 the company was led by Emil von Kessler, probably the son of Emil Kessler.

Into the 60's 20. Century altogether several thousand steam and diesel locomotives were world-wide supplied, among them numerous special equipments. The ME acquired itself a special call by the building of its Zahnradlokomotiven in many variants. With such a machine also the Dampflokomotivbau in Esslingen locked and thus at the same time in completely Western Europe: On 21 October 1966 the work left as a last gear wheel steam engine built for Indonesia.

The ME was last a subsidiary property hope hut. 1965 acquired Daimler Benz AG the enterprise, in order to use the factories for their production. Engine works Esslingen AG exists also today (2006) still, however only as pure property and farm lease company.
