Emperor William country (German new Guinea) was the northeast part of the island new Guinea. Principal place was at that time Madang under the name Friedrich William port.

Topography

The area became to the west of the Netherlands part (today west Papua) and south of the British (since 1906 Australian) part of the island limited. It extended from 141"° Length eastward and in the south to 8"° Width. The land surface amounted to 181,650 km with at that time 110,000 inhabitants (conditions: 1902).

The island part consists mainly of mountains, only the extreme north contains more expanded levels at the empress Augusta river and Ramu. The south is from mountain courses pulled through, which rise partly more than 4000 m: Kraetkegebirge, Bismarck mountains and Hagengebirge. The watercourses are usually only mountain rivers.

Administration

The emperor William country formed the imperial Gouvernement and protected area German new Guinea together with the Bismarck archipelago, including the German Salomonen islands, with the Karolinen, Palau islands, Marshall Islands and the German Ladronen (in the broader sense).

Since 1921 the area as well as likewise formerly the German Bismarck archipelago was according to international law Australian mandated territory. 1975 were combined it with the Australian Papua to Papua New Guinea and independently.

Research

In the year 1882 the two companies represented German handels and plan day company (the successor of Godefroy) and Robertson & Hernsheim (late Hernsheim & CO.) the German commercial interests in close proximity to new Guinea. In order to do also on the mainland of new Guinea the first steps for a German colonizing, became from financial people, how Adolph of Hans man, who selects Otto Finsch.

Finsch traveled at the beginning of of 1884 to new Guinea and visited from Mioko on three journeys nearly the entire north coast. With its journeys he discovered sieved ports and the empress Augusta river, locked contracts over land acquisitions and hisste the German flag. The first station was created on 5 November 1885 in Finschhafen. It formed the origin of the Neuguinea Compgnie. Soon Hatzfeldhafen and Konstantinhafen followed. 1888 were added step Hans place, 1890 Erima and later still different.

Finschhafen was up to the large malaria epidemic disease 1891 seat of the national captain.
