The EDEKA group is since 2005 by assumption saves trade AG the largest group in the German retail trade. Basis of the EDEKA group are cooperatives, in which independent retailers united. Regional companies are responsible for the wholesale firm and supply the independent dealers like the branch enterprises, which belong over the regional companies or the EDEKA center AG & CO kg to the group or cooperate with it.

History

The EDEKA group developed 1898, when 21 purchase associations from the German Reich in the gate district in Berlin united to resounding ashes for the purchasing association of the grocers. 13 of such cooperatives united 1907 to the federation of German commercial cooperatives with attached GmbH as central goods procurement office. 1911 were formed from the abbreviation EDK (of purchasing association of German grocers) until today valid company and label name the EDEKA (purchasing association of the German grocers). EDEKA developed own products, which are to be recognized by the EDEKA seal in the course of the years.

1914 were created the EDEKA bank. 1923 begin the central accounting. Starting from 1933 the EDEKA is as cooperatives at pressure. Starting from 1936 their acting is dirigistisch reglementiert.

After that 2. World war is led the reconstruction by a new center in Hamburg. 1954 begin the age of the self-service. 1955 is formed Fruchtkontore in Bochum, Hamburg, Frankfurt/Main and Munich. Since 1957 the Non Food assortment becomes important.

1972 give itself the EDEKA group a new structure with the establishment of 12 regional companies. The center and the bank change the legal form and become a corporation.

1982 begin be-economical co-operation with the AVA AG. 1990 is transferred some HO-sales offices and EDEKA returns to the new countries. 1991 take part EDEKA to the Danish A/S Hoki in Horsens and create the CS EDEKA in Tschechien.

1992 enter EDEKA with scarcely 33% portion with the AVA AG, these 1993 to scarcely 50% are increased. In this year EDEKA takes part to the Gedelfi in Cologne.

1997 begin the partial centralization of the German purchase. 1998 is taken over markets, among other things of the AVA AG and the Metro group.

Since 2000 EDEKA Danmark with REMA 1000 A/S cooperates, to a daughter of the Norwegian Raitan group. The participation to the AVA AG is continued to increase.

2001 a renewed structural reform. The center is strengthened further and receives the today's legal form EDEKA center AG & CO kg. The number of the regional companies is reduced of 12 to 7. The participation to the AVA AG is increased. As answer to the increasing meaning of the Discounter the EDEKA mark property & favorable is again presented. Since 2003 are well-known a co-operation with globe.

2005 the final integration of the AVA AG takes place in the EDEKA group and the assumption of the Germans SAVES with approximately 2,100 retailers of the various savings selling lines and unites consumer markets. Also the former savings daughter was net acquired mark Discount and a participation of 25% in the German daughter of the net chain. The purchase co-operation of SAVE with NET by EDEKA one continues.

Since 2005 EDEKA is connected in the purchase alliance ALIDIS/Agenor with ITM Enterprises (for the salesman of the Germans SAVE and the net chains) and EROSKI (center Comerciales Ceco S.A., Spain).

Meaning

After the assumption of the Germans SAVE and for the net mark Discount is EDEKA at the beginning of 2006 the No. 1 in the German food retail trade. The market share of the group grew from 20 on approximately 26%. Under EDEKA and SAVE are active nearly 6,000 retailers, who operate over 7.000 business. With the branch enterprises about 11,500 business is to be ranked among the EDEKA group.

For the year 2005 a company turnover is proven of 38 billion "€. The result before taxes and interest (PUBLIC EXHIBITION FOR MULTIMEDIA) was with 480 millions "€. Firm's structure

EDEKA developed from regional cooperatives. At present 10 cooperatives with approximately 5000 members form the foundation of the EDEKA group. The cooperatives are owners of the EDEKA center and to 50% owner of the 7 EDEKA regional companies. The second partner at these regional companies is the EDEKA center AG & CO kg.

The EDEKA center AG & CO kg

The center has a large weight in the EDEKA group as partner of the cooperatives at the regional companies. Additionally the role of the center is strengthened by their subsidiaries and participation. These are branch enterprises of the trade (AVA AG, net Markendiscount, net Germany, EDEKA big consumer service, purchase centers (EDEKA fruit and Blumenkontor), production enterprise (Rhine mountain wine cellar) and central service companies (EDEKA publishing house, EDEKABANK AG, EDEKA insurance.

The regional companies

The 7 regional companies are the operational units of the EDEKA group. They are in the core wholesale businesses and supply the independent dealers and branch enterprises. They are owners of branch enterprises and production enterprises.

The regional companies are:

• EDEKA north

• EDEKA min the Hanover with the center in Minden is responsible for Lower Saxony, Saxonia-Anhalt, Berlin and Brandenburg.

• EDEKA Rhine Ruhr with seat in Moers is responsible for the largest part of North Rhine-Westphalia.

• EDEKA Hessen ring supplies North Hesse.

• EDEKA southwest in open castle serves Baden-Wuerttemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and south Hessen.

• EDEKA Nordbayern Saxonia in gang village concentrates on Franconias, Saxonia and Thuringia

• EDEKA South Bavaria in Ingolstadt is responsible for the southern parts of Bayerns. This society holds also 75% at the EDEKA society ADEG.
