The economical congress and/or the congress of German political economists was created 1858 in Gotha. The economical congress supported energetically the free trade. Model was Richard Cobdens anti- Corn Law League.

The congress of German political economists supported particularly for the free trade and the Genossenschaftswesen. Important members of the congress were John Prince Smith, Julius Faucher, William Adolf Lette, Hermann Schulze Delitzsch, Heinrich Bernhard Oppenheim and Karl brown, which held most time also the presidency.

Important impulses (e.g. Introduction of the gold currency 1871, restriction of the notes 1874) could give the economical congress for the policy. The increasing liberalisation in the German marketing area, first in the German customs union, then in north Germans the federation and also in the German Reich, as well as the national agreement by the congress were welcomed later and carried. Due to the influence on the policy, which the congress enjoyed, the congress of German political economists was called also briefly a free trade party.

With the increasing protectionism the congress at meaning lost. The year 1880 became one fate year for the German free trade movement, for the German liberalism and for the congress of German political economists, that met in this year to the last mark. 1880 agreed Reichstag Bismarck policy of customs protectionism, which led then also to splitting the national liberals a party.
