The Economic Community OF west African States (ECOWAS) is a regional group from at present 15 states. ECOWAS became to 28. May 1975 with the signing of the contract of Lagos based. On 24 July 1993 in Cotonou, Benin, closed Revised Treaty replaces the contract of Lagos formally and sets the ECOWAS to a new legal basis. A goal of the union is the development of the economic integration of these countries. In addition further goals, among other things a gradual political integration, came the expression found in the mechanism of a common westAfrican Court of Justice as well as a common westAfrican parliament in the year 2001 into run the time. Beyond that with the intervention of the ECOMOG into Liberia during the civil war at the beginning of the 90's an important safetypolitical role was added, which is to consider after end of the cold war to the changing basic conditions.

A goal at the time of the establishment was it to achieve "collective self-sufficiency" for the member states possible by the establishment of a large domestic market and an economic and a monetary union. The introduction of the Eco as westAfrican currency, decided last, was again shifted in the year 2004, since due to the political and economic problems the agreed upon convergence criteria could not be fulfilled all involved ones.

Mauritania, a member of the first hour, left 2001 the community, in order to orient itself politically more in the Arab-African area.

Within the community the structure of the ECOWAS is characterized by a strong supremacy of Nigeria. Also the secretariat has its seat in the Nigerian Abuja. The country places more than half of the population and resource of the community. Within the ECOWAS there is still another its own, frankophone community of similar structure, which must be regarded at least at present still as competition for larger organization.
