The term seems original to have developed in connection with the Christian value system.
After contribution of outstanding achievements for a community, for example with the practice of an honorary office or as politicians, by the state and by federations earnings/service medals are lent. Which a deserving act can be, depends always on the society and its value importance.

As alleged paradox one could say: Earnings/services of women are on the average xx% smaller than earnings/services of men, although the merit/service of men and women equal much value has.
