"the DUO "is a patient vehicle for persons with going handicap, which was designed in the building of trailers Brandis, construction of vehicles Robur (starting from 1981) or the company ruffle in Leipzig from (partially modified) construction units of the so-called windshield frame section on bird series, mainly such the swallow, to a large extent. About 1000 to 1100 pieces of it per year were built.

Models

There were different versions of the DUOs (DUO 4, DUO 4/1, DUO 4/2) in the course of the years, whereby the DUO 4-1 was the usually-built model. This type was manufactured 1973 to 1989. The development step to /1 became clear by the following changes: The suspension was taken over from now on by hydraulically working shock absorbers and the capacity of the tank was increased of 6,8 to 13 litres fuel. The moreover there were outside mirrors now on both sides. It possessed 49.6 cm - an a cylinder two-stroke engine (designation: M53/11AR) with handswitched three-course claw transmission and automatic centrifugal clutch in the oil bath for starting, as it was used also nearly identically constructed with the small scooter type "swallow" (KR51/1S). This engine developed an output of 2,65 KW (3.6 HP), with which the DUO on even roadway reached a maximum speed of approximately 50 km/h.

Legal regulations

Permission for the acquisition of a DUOs was given in former times in the GDR only on request by the local social and/or institute for health insurance (SVK) exclusively to handicapped persons, whom then with an appropriate licence after waiting period partially of several years at own expense of one the manufacturer a DUO could acquire available.

The DUO is a not registration-obligated vehicle, which is to be only provided today with an insurance characteristic.
