By drowning one understands generally a killing by asphyxiation by and/or in the water.

Particularly one summarizes any kinds of death penalties, with which the condemned ones were brought by different ways by the pressing of their body under water to asphyxiation death under the term drowning.

In the Middle Ages and in the early modern times this death penalty was executed particularly at women. They were driven in the Middle Ages in the moorland.

A variant represented for example to bags, with which the condemned ones were inserted into bags and thrown in the water. Usually however the Delinquenten was bound, thrown then in the water and pressed afterwards with bars under the water surface.

With the death penalty of drowning the symbol character of the water played an important role: Cleaning effect is awarded to the water.

One of the most prominent victims of this punishment method is Hippasus, a pupil of the Pythagoras. After the legend Pythagoreer Hippasus let drown, after this had not on betrayed the marvelous proof for the existence of surds inaugurating (thus no members of the pythagoreischen group). Further famous victims of this punishment method are Agnes Bernauer and Johannes Nepomuk.

The execution method was used also for mass executions in Nantes during the fright rule of the French revolution. Between 1793 and 1794 Jean Baptiste carrier left in each case two condemned ones bound together by special boats equipped with flaps (always a man and a woman), into which Loire throw. Jean Baptiste carrier called this execution method zynisch "senkrechte Deportation ". These mass executions are well-known also under the not less zynischen term "of the republican marriages ".

In the republic Venice was drowning a usual execution method. Frequently the execution was carried out still in the court by the fact that the head of the condemned one was pressed by force into a bucket water, until the condemned one was dead.
