Drechseln (tricks), a body, to which on the Drechselbank a rotating motion is communicated, by application of cutting tools a certain form give. Drechseln developed, historically seen, from the original form of boring.

One drechselt wood, green wood, Schildpatt, and one speaks ivory, with metals against it of the rotation. The Drechsler is either Holzdrechsler (usual Drechsler) or Kunstdrechsler.

Hardwood is gedrechselt with high numbers of revolutions, while soft wood is gedrechselt against it with lower numbers of revolutions. The more largely the article, the smaller the numbers of revolutions of the workpiece and/or turned the smaller the diameter the more highly the numbers of revolutions of the workpiece. Differently expressed the Winkelgeschindigkeit of the cut procedure must be higher, than the Schergeschwindigkeit of the wood. If the angular speed is too high, the bursts and there is mortal danger.

Already Phidias is to have applied the Drechslerkunst to wood and ivory. Alexander the large one, Artaxerxes of Persia, Peter the large one and emperor Rudolf II. drove the Drechslerkunst to their pleasure. Also Martin Luther was an industrious Drechsler.
