The Dornier Seastar (also Claudius Dornier Seastar) is a twin-engine amphibian of the German manufacturer Dornier.


Into the early 1980er years developed the Dornier works a general-purpose amphibian, which can be inserted without special equipment from grass runways, by water snow and ice surfaces out. The first flight of the experimental model VT-01 (also called PT 01) took place on 17 August 1984. In order to save time and costs during flight testing, this machine was equipped with the metal wing of the DO 27.

Claudius Dornier was the oldest son of Claude Dornier and felt the legacy of the father of water airplanes to build to want strongly obligated. It presented the project Seastar against the resistance of the Miterben and created in the long run its own enterprise for the Seastar. Daimler Benz it put the Dornier works, like also the later majority portion owners to the Dornier works, value on the fact that it concerned an external, own project of Claudius Dornier. If capacities the Dornier works in Friedrichshafen and Oberpfaffenhofen were used, an accounting took place debited to of Claudius Dornier, and/or the Seastar GmbH.

In the spring 1986 the Seastar project became into the again created enterprise Claudius Dornier SEASTAR GmbH & CO. Kg separated, which should realize the Seastar project from now on. The type certification was given in October 1990 by the Federal Office of Aviation. At this time existed two firm of buying orders, five options and 72 orders. However the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs stopped the necessary promotions, so that the program could not be continued.

In order to secure the created technology basis, Conrado Dornier 1991 created the Dornier Seastar GmbH & CO. Kg, which came up 2001 in the Dornier Seawings AG. With the goal of the realization of the Seastar program the only still existing Seastar until today is kept airworthy.

Technical design

Proven principles the earlier Dornier Flugboote and modern technology are united in the Seastar:

  • The trunk consists to a large extent of fiber-reinforced plastic. In order to receive a cell very steady to corrosion by sea waters, this is to a large extent made of glass fiber and carbon-fiber-reinforced epoxy resin. At upward the trunk pulled around a stage two lateral Stabilisierungstummeln are attached, which are to guarantee the good sea-freedom of movement. The trunk soil is prepared.
  • The Seastar is a half cantilever Schirmhochdecker, whose wing unit is abgestrebt. The two Pratt & Whitney engines are put on in tandem arrangement with one pressure and tractor propeller each. This unusual arrangement is to secure reliable flight behavior in each weather.
  • The cantilever tail unit corresponds to the normal building method and contains a very highly set horizontal tail unit.
  • The retractable chassis is in the bottom structure and in two Flossenstummeln, which the Stabilisierungstummel mentioned is attached. The simply bereifte nose gear wheel is in the fuselage nose, the doubly bereiften main landing gear legs in the stubs.

Application type

With the development Dornier, to the tradition accordingly, attached great importance to the versatile usefulness of the sample. The application type of a land plane with those of a Seeflugzeuges on the cost level of a conventional land plane are combined. As possible application type the manufacturer calls:
