Domingo Ghirardelli sen. (* 1817 in Rapallo/Italy; "† 1894 ebenda) were an Italian Chocolatier.

Domenico Ghirardelli was the son of a Chocolatiers. In the year 1837 it pulled first to Uruguay, afterwards in the year 1838 to Lima/Peru, where it opened a confectioner's shop and changed its first names in Domingo (the spanischsprachige equivalent of its birth name).

During California gold fever it pulled it to 1849 to California, where it spent first several months in Sonora and Jamestown. After a short time as dealers in stick clay/tone it created the Ghirardelli Chocolate company in San Francisco.

Approximately in the year 1865 Ghirardelli developed a manufacturing process for chocolate, which is well-known and very far common today as Broma process.

Domingo Ghirardelli died 1894 during a journey into its place of birth Rapallo. It is buried on the Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland.

With the Ghirardelli Chocolate company it left a world-wide well-known enterprise of the chocolate industry, which remained up to the assumption by the Swiss company Lindt & in the year 1998 in the family estate.
