A Decurio, about "ten-shank leader" (lat.: decem - ten), the leader of a group of 10 (Decurie) in the Roman army was original. The smallest unit of a Legion the tent community was later contubernium from 8 men, which did not have a leading rank.

In the early period also the nationalRoman Reiterei had a subdivision of each Turma in three Decurien with in each case a Decurio. This name for the leaders of a Kavallerieabteilung remained existing also, when there was a leader per Turma in the later Alen of the Auxiliarkavallerie only, these thus 30,-40 men led. The Decurio of the Reiterei is on an equal footing a Centurio of the Legion. Like these the Decurio carried the remarkable helmet shrubs transverseposed (Crista transversa). It received at least the quadruple pay of a simple soldier and had probably three horses (a change horse and a luggage horse).

It is to differentiate thus exactly with respect to which connection the rank emerges. In the Infantrie was probably it a crew rank, in the Alen against it a very prestigious officer post.
