A dead mail box is a hiding place, which serves the transmission of secret messages.

The dead mail box is only the sender and the receiver as such well-known - thus by no means a material mail box - and thus against discovery by Nichteingeweihte protected. It is used by persons, who cannot to step or want openly or postal with one another into direct contact, for example by coworkers and informers of intelligence services, by informants of journalists, in addition, by blackmailers.

The typical expiration of transmission is as follows: The message giver loads the message into the dead mail box (e.g. a branch hole) and leaves in agreed upon other place an indication, by which the receiver can recognize that the mail box "activates" is (e.g. at a Hauswand).
