A coast guard is mostly a national, usually the respective ministry of the Interior being subordinate authority or in addition, a union of several authorities of a state as the safety device and a check of the maritime traffic (navigation police), rescue in emergency and emergencies and for the prevention and pursuit of criminal offences in the coastal sea and on the high sea, like e.g. the monitoring over fishing catch quotas and other editions (examination of catch net mesh sizes not to endanger around the existence of small and young fish) or the observance of environmental-protection regulations. Also a national coast guard in times of war can represent part of the armed forces to sea, like e.g. the United States Coast Guard.
In the Federal Republic of Germany these tasks of that are noticed 1995 created coordination group coast guard from several federal authorities and - institutes (federal customs administration/water tariff, the federal police, the water and shipping administration, the Federal Institution for agriculture and nutrition, Federal Office for sea-going vessel travel and Hydrografie).
In Schleswig-Holstein at the end of of 2005 existed its own coast guard as group of water protection police, office for rural areas and national office for nature and environment from 1995 to the dissolution.
Since the pool of the authority under a common roof on federal level failed because of the resistance of other Lands of the Federal Republic, Schleswig-Holstein decided, to dissolve this group now.
