Clothes are the whole of the dresses. It forms a protecting covering around the human body and is as measure of the body organization a means of nonverbaler communication.

Functions

The fundamental function of the clothes is the protection of the human body from unwanted influences of the external world such as cold weather, wetness, heat etc. further protective functions: the protection forwards views, the protection from force and injury (helmet, armament), the protection from bacteria (hygiene), etc. (see also protective clothing).

Apart from the protective function clothes have frequently also a marking function. In this sense and specify clothes mark the carrier of the clothes. Thus clothes become means of communication, the indication.

The simplest form of the marking is marking as noteworthy object. An example of it are the orange warning west of road workers.

Frequently clothes mark its carrier as associated one of a group. In the sport clothes mark for example the members of a crew. Further examples of this kind of marking are the presentation of occupation roles, rank differences or Standesunterschieden and thus the demarcation and/or affiliation of other social groups and/or individuals.

Further marking functions of the clothes are aesthetic kind: itself expression wools or decorating the carrier, further aesthetic-ironical playing and experimenting with established forms of the marking, etc.

Beyond that clothes have often also still another sinnliche experience function. Clothes are luxury or even toy. Among them the sinnliche benefit falls at certain materials, forms and colors and at playing and experimenting with forms, colors, materials. Examples are the Kuscheln in soft materials and the erotisch sexually stimulating effect with Materialfetischismen (see also Fetischismus), as well as the benefit of a graceful feature.

Meaning of clothes

The meaning of clothes is pronounced individually and dependent on social surrounding field (and its roles expectation at the particulars) very differently. For the one is it only unimportant outward appearance and/or pragmatic utensils, for others a completely substantial component of their life.

In addition, one attaches to the meaning, the clothes in the kind, exist substantial differences. They strike themselves down in the very different aspects, to which the particular pays attention with priority with the choice of its clothes: Completely different motives can put mode consciousness, mark consciousness, style consciousness, beauty consciousness, importance of customs functionality, well-being feeling components, erotische Stimulanz etc. behind it: Pragmatismus, benefit props, desire for integration by assimilation, expression from feelings and tendencies, desire for well-being, impressing behavior, expression of the own life-style, Nonkonformismus, rebellion etc.

Similar however not synonymous terms

If from clothes the speech is, often also different terms with not identical meaning are used:

  • Textiles: The term goes out more strongly with the however not necessary prevailing with clothes. Not all textiles are articles of clothing.
  • Laundry
  • Clothes
  • Outfit: The whole of the conscious organization of the outside feature: Clothes, shoes, decoration, hair-style etc.
  • expresses feature: Also the appearance of the body includes also beside Outfit.
  • Mode
  • Clothing

Possibilities of the partitioning

Clothes let themselves through to differentiate:

  • different materials (e.g. Leather, fur, Webstoff, artificial fibrous material with different Design),
  • Situation of the clothes (clothing and Unterbekleidung (underwear)
  • different forms (e.g. Jacket, trousers, skirt, coat, dress, blouse, shoes etc.)
  • different accessories of the clothes (accessory and decoration)
  • Sex of the carriers: Industry designation DOB (lady clothing) and HAKA (gentlemen and boy)
  • different fashions of the individual epochs or decades
  • the social reasons for development: Social Distinktion
  • by marks and labels

Zeichenhaftigkeit

The reasons of the demarcation by clothes can be group specific. So one can differentiate on the basis the clothes:

  • the race (masterspecific clothes),
  • the nation (Nationaltracht, e.g. Burnus, Tunika or Toga)
  • the function as an office-holder (uniform, Amtstracht, service clothes)
  • the religion (religion-specific clothes) head cloth, Burka,
  • the occupation (working clothes)
  • the club membership, (Tracht) etc., which determined kinds and ranks in each case marked.

Clothes can be sex specific, agespecific or also condition/class/box specific. In the western industrial nations the different life-styles justify different developments of and demarcations by clothes. The scientific occupation with clothes takes place via the volkskundliche clothe research.
