Critical infrastructures (KRITIS) are institutions and mechanisms with important meaning for the national community, when whose loss or impairment lastingly working bottlenecks, substantial disturbances of public security or other dramatic consequences would occur.

Among the critical infrastructures are ranked:

• Transport and traffic,
• Energy (electricity, oil and gas)
• Danger materials (chemistry and bio materials, danger property goods, armaments industry)
• Information technology and telecommunications
• Financial, money and insurance
• Supply (health, emergency and emergency measures, disaster control, food and water supply, disposal)
• Authorities, administration and law (including police, tariff and German Federal Armed Forces)
• Other (media, large-scale-research facilities as well as outstanding or symbol-pregnant buildings, cultural property).
